Volunteer Opportunity for the 6th gr. Ellis Island Experience

Attention 6th grade families. On January 25, 2019 Pioneer Ridge Middle School will be transformed into Ellis Island. On that day middle school students from West and throughout District 112 will travel to Ellis Island and experience the challenges of entering through the busiest immigration center of the United States at the turn of the century. To make this simulation a great learning experience we need around 200 volunteers. As a volunteer your commitment on that day would be from about 8:30am – 11:40am. Student is Selected for the State Honor Jazz Ensemble

Gordie Molin has been selected for the Minnesota Band Directors’ Association Middle School State Honor Jazz Ensemble. Gordie was chosen as the best middle school drummer in the state! He will rehearse and then perform with the ensemble on Sunday, Jan. 20 at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. The ensemble will perform again at the Minneapolis Convention Center as part of the State Music Teachers Convention in February. Gordie plays in the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Garage Band, Pop Ensemble and many other music ensembles at Chaska Middle School West. He also takes private lessons. Multi-Cultural School Assembly

During our third cultural assembly of the year, we were excited to enjoy and learn about Somali culture through music and dancing. Our guest, Dalmar Yare is a favorite in the Somali music scene and a highly sought-after singer at Somali weddings and cultural celebrations. His fan base on social media reaches the hundreds of thousands. Dalmar’s thoughts about culture and music are that “Somali culture has a lot of ways to proceed and American culture is the same, “…music is an international language. It helps people come together and feel what you are saying.
